American heavy metal band Mastodon is a prolific quartet from Atlanta. The band, which emerged in 2000, has released several highly acclaimed studio albums, including their groundbreaking debut, Remission, in 2002. The band has garnered awards from heavy metal publications like Kerrang!, Revolver, and Terrorizer. Many of these awards went to their sophomore effort, Leviathan, a studio release based on Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. In 2007, the band received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance for their single “Colony of Birchmen.” the song is featured in its 2006 effort, Blood Mountain. Two years later, Mastodon released their highest charting effort to date, The Hunter, peaking at number 10 on the Billboard 200. The album spawned the hit “Curl of the Burl,” which earned the band another Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance. Mastodon later earned two more nominations for the single “High Road” from their seventh album, Emperor of the Sand, and another for their eighth album, Hushed and Grim.
French heavy metal icon Gojira has significantly impacted with their progressive and technical death metal sound. The quartet from Landes has released seven highly-acclaimed albums, including their latest Fortitude, released in 2021. The band debuted with Terra Incognita in 2001, but it wasn’t until their 2012 effort, L’Enfant Sauvage, that they made their international breakthrough. The fifth effort peaked at number 7 in their home country France and debuted at number 34 on the Billboard 200. In 2021, the band released Fortitude, which became their highest-charting album in the U.S. Meanwhile, it also peaked at number 2 in France, making it their top-charting album.
